This uncle of mine came over this afternoon to cook. He brought crabs that are still alive and struggling, fat prawns and fish maw. For years, I've hardly seen him, not even during important Chinese festivals like Lunar New Year. Lately I've been seeing him and my dad addresses him in the traditionally respectful term of "Older Brother" in the Chinese dialect, Hainanese.

I tell him the food is good, then I leave the table and return to my room.
